The History of the Royal Matchrace Centre

When Royal Danish Yacht Club in 1993 started the matchrace centre as a opportunity for young people to continue with yacht club sailing after ending the junior time, only a few would have dreamt that it could develop into one of the worlds best matchrace centers. None the less that is the status after 13 years.

The Royal matchrace Centre has in 2005 underlined its position as a professional training centre, where several of the America’s Cup teams have chosen to have a part of there training.

The original idea for the centre is maintained. It is still the primary task to provide our own crews with the best development and training opportunities. This is also visible as we right now have 9 of our crews in the top 100 of the Open world ranking list. Two of them in the top 15.  Even more impressive in the Women´s ranking, where we have two teams in Top 10.

On the event organizing side the Royal Matchrace Centre is also among the leaders. We have organized EC and WC in matchrace, and are in 2006 organizer of the Women’s world championship in matchrace. Every year the world pro tour of matchracing – the Swedish Match Tour – consisting of the 9 biggest events in world. The Royal Matchrace Centre is one of the founding members of the Tour and we are hosting the event known as Danish Open.

On top of this the Royal Matchrace Centre hosts around 10-12 other events in matchracing. The very high activity level of course demands a lot of man hours. This work is primarily done by voluntary helpers found among the members of the centre. They are all sailors and therefore have a professional attitude to the job at hand. This means that all the jobs are executed professionally and with a focus on high quality.

A part from the great number of man hours the centre activities requires money. The centres sources of revenue is three legged. First we have the sponsors, secondly we have the membership fees and thirdly we have the company sailing events.

All three are very dependent on a professional execution with a high quality focus.
